the bleach rainbow

why does bleach turn things different colors before it goes white? like that navy golf shirt i have with the pink doodle on it; the doodle was done in bleach pen- why didn't it go straight white or just become a lighter blue?

    it takes a lot to get dye out...dying your hair for instance...it takes a while to get the new color in and the old color out or vice versa.

    yeah, but why does it turn a DIFFERENT color, why not just a lighter shade of the original?
